Kilburn Neighbours
"A helping hand for the over 60s"
Kilburn Neighbours' purpose is to improve the quality of life of vulnerable older people in the Kilburn ward of Camden, North West London, NW6. We achieve this through assisting our scheme users to live more independently in their own homes as well as organising opportunites for them to socialise outside of their homes. With the help of volunteers, the scheme is able to offer over 60s a wide variety of services and activities:
• befriending service – our volunteers visit scheme users in their own homes either regularly or occasionally, as preferred;
• dedicated telephone and in-person support and advice from the scheme's coordinators;
• help with cleaning windows, maintaining gardens and other practical jobs around the home;
• help getting to appointments or to the shops, etc, or just for a walk;
• help with completing forms and applications (e.g. Taxi Card; Pension Credit, etc);
• links to other support networks for older people;
• regular newsletters and updates of the community centre's activities covering topics and issues of specific interest to older people
• annual programme of social events, activities and trips; some held at the local community centres, some further afield. Fully accessible transport is usually provided.
There is no charge to join Kilburn Neighbours and most of our services and activities are completely free or, when that is not possible, offered at minimal cost to cover some of the scheme's expenses.
The scheme is very well established, having been running since Oct 1998, and there is usually a waiting list to join, although we do try to keep the wait as short as possible.
Volunteers Needed!
Kilburn Neighbours would not be the success it is were it not for the help and commitment offered by its volunteers. Our volunteers are given full training and support as well as the opportunity to really make a difference to people's lives in the local community. Interested?
We would love to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering a few hours of your time in any or a combination of the following ways: to regularly or occasionally visit an older person; to do small DIY type tasks; window cleaning; gardening etc; to escort our scheme users to appointments or to the shops; to help deal with simple correspondence; and to provide an extra pair of hands every now and again when we are running an event.
Times and days of volunteering will be arranged according to your availability. To find out more please contact the Scheme Co-ordinators, details below. The Abbey community Centre, Kilburn NW6, often needs volunteers to help out at its twice weekly low cost cafe for over 60s. For more information click here.
